About Me

A Special Piece of Jewelry

My beloved grandfather passed away 23 years ago. I was only 12 years old when this special person in my life died. However, this man taught me so many things during the few years I spent with him. My grandfather was also an accomplished guitarist. A few months ago, I visited the home he shared with my grandmother. While searching through his old belongings, I found a guitar pick. To keep the memory of my grandfather alive, I want to make a necklace out of this special token from my grandfather’s past. On this blog, you will discover how to make jewelry items from guitar picks.

How To Help Your Elderly Father Choose The Right Diabetic Socks For Him

by Priscilla Gray

Diabetic socks are specially designed to ward off some of the symptoms and side effects of diabetes. By stopping the pooling of blood in the legs, diabetic socks can prevent the blistering and ulceration that can cause diabetes patients pain and discomfort. If you are a caregiver for your elderly diabetic father, you may have to help him choose the right socks. By selecting the right socks with the right fit, your father will be able to get the most benefit out of his diabetic socks, which can improve his comfort and prevent complications from diabetes. These tips will help you in the process.

Copper Content

It's said that 25% of people with diabetes will develop foot ulcers because of their condition. Of these people who develop ulcers, half of them will develop infections, and an astounding 20% of those people will have an amputation. The good news is that copper-infused socks have disinfecting properties that kill fungi in the skin, or stimulate the body's own ability to kill fungi itself. In essence, choosing diabetic socks that have been infused with copper can actually save your father's feet. Read all labels and look for copper on the included materials list before choosing your father's socks.

Pick the Right Color

If your dad doesn't have sensation in his feet (and many diabetics don't), or if he has limited sensation in his feet, then he may not spot an open ulcer right away. Lighter colored socks will show evidence of open sores, whereas darker colored socks will not.

At this point, your father may not realize how little feeling he actually has in his feet. To help him find out, sit at your father's feet and touch them gently with something like the eraser top of a pencil or the tip of a spoon. Ask your father what sensations he can feel, and where he can feel them. If your father has no sensation in his feet at all, buy him light colored socks. If your father reports feeling only some touches, but not all, seek light colored socks to be on the safe side.

Try on the Socks Before Purchasing

Your father will need to try on the socks to find the right size and brand for him. Remember that diabetic socks for men do not come in the same sizes as men's shoes. To find the right size of diabetic sock, look for a sock that fits just snugly enough to stay up on the ankle. Socks that are too restrictive can impede blood flow and lead to circulation problems. Ask your father to walk around in the socks to ensure that they stay up on the leg when he moves.

Following these tips, you should be able to pick socks that will help keep your father healthy and comfortable. For more information about picking the right diabetic socks, speak with your father's doctor.
